What is Search Engine Optimization (SEO) ?

SEO is the process of optimizing your website so that it ranks higher in search engine results pages (SERPs) when people search for relevant keywords. The better your SEO, the more likely people are to find your site organically — without paid ads.

Why SEO is so important ?

When a user search any key word on the google or any other search engine then usually user don’t scroll a lot, user mostly clicks on the top 3 links or sometimes top 5 links. Because mostly user gets the solution for the query in the top 5 links.
So, A higher ranking means:
• More visibility
• More website visitors
• More trust from users
• More conversions or sales

For businesses, blogs, or any digital project, SEO isn’t optional — it’s essential.

What are the Three Pillars of SEO ?

1. On-Page SEO

It is managing everything within your website — basically, the content and structure.

2. Off-Page SEO

This is all about how other websites and platforms interact with yours.

3. Technical SEO

This focuses on the behind-the-scenes parts of your website that impact how search engines crawl and index your content.

How the Search Engine Works ?

To understand this first we need to understand,

what’s the “Search Engine ” is ?

Basically, a search engine is software tool that help users to find the information on the SERP (search engine result page). The most popular ones include Google, Bing, and Yahoo — but Google is the leader in the market with over 90% of all searches.

When you search a query  into a search engine, like:

“how to start a YouTube channel”

The search engine goes through billions of web pages to find the most relevant and useful results for you — all within seconds.

Now the thing came is “How a search engine works” ?

The Three Main Steps of How a Search Engine Works are :

Search engines follow a three-step process:

1. Crawling

This is the discovery phase.

Search engines send out bots or “spiders” to explore the web and find new pages or updated content. These bots crawl through links on websites, reading the content and gathering data.

Example:

Imagine you publish a blog post titled “Best Social Media Tools for Small Businesses”. Once that post is live, Googlebot (Google’s web crawler) will eventually visit your website, read the content, and store it in Google’s database — if it’s accessible and crawlable.

SEO Tip: Make sure your website is mobile-friendly, has a clean structure, and includes an updated sitemap to help search engines crawl it efficiently.

2. Indexing

After crawling, comes indexing — this is the storage phase.

Once a new page is discovered, then the search engine tries to understand what it’s about. It analyzes:

  • Keywords
  • Page titles
  • Meta descriptions
  •  Headings
  • Internal and external links
  • Media files (like images with alt text)

And now finally the page is stored in the search engine’s index — the very big database for all the content it has found..

Example:

Let’s say your article talks about Instagram marketing strategies. If the search engine sees the keywords “Instagram tips,” “grow followers,” and “social media content plan” mentioned naturally throughout, it will categorize that article under those topics.

SEO Tip: Use relevant keywords, structure content with proper headings (<h1>, <h2>, etc.), and provide original value to improve indexing.

3. Ranking

This is where the magic happens.
When somebody writes a query on search page, and then after that the search engine shifts through its indexed pages and then it decides which ones are the most relevant, useful, and trustworthy. Then it ranked on the top positions and shown in the search results page (SERP).
Generally a search engine uses hundreds of ranking factors, some of them are:
• Keyword relevance
• Page load speed
• Mobile responsiveness
• Backlinks from other trusted websites
• User engagement (like for how much time does the user remains on page and bounce rate)

Example:

If someone searches for “best digital marketing tools 2025”, and your article is well-optimized, fast, mobile-friendly, and linked by other sites — there’s a good chance it could appear on the first page.

SEO Tip: Focus on writing helpful, high-quality content that answers users’ questions better than anyone else.

Real-World Analogy

Think of a search engine like a librarian in the world’s largest library.

  • Crawling is like the librarian reading all the new books.

  • Indexing is the process of organizing those books on the shelves.

  • Ranking is choosing the best book to recommend based on your question.
